Indonesian handicraft industry has the potential to make a big contribution to foreign exchange through export access of its products. The handicraft or craft sector, which is one of the creative industry sectors, already has a market with a wide network in various countries in the world such as the United States and Europe.

According to Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto, the strength of Indonesian handicraft industry supported from natural raw material sources abundant, cultural diversity of Nusantara, and craftsmanship of craftsmen. The Minister of Industry itself already has an increase in HR competency program and encourages technology for small and medium industries (IKM). The goal is to boost the competitiveness of IKM by creating creativity and innovation.

The Ministry of Industry noted that the export value of Indonesian handicraft products in 2017 reached US $776 million. That going up compared to 2016 by US $747 million. Meanwhile, the number of handicraft industry in Indonesia more than 700 thousand business units by absorbing labor of 1.32 million people.

E-Smart IKM for Indonesian handicraft industry

The Indonesian handicraft industry is also encouraged to utilize digital platforms such as e-Smart IKM. That created by the Ministry of Industry. Implementation of this program cooperates with a number of marketplace in Indonesia.


Until now, participants who have participated in the workshop activity e-Smart IKM as many as 4,000 business actors. Total sales value recorded at RP1, 3 billion.

The e-Smart IKM Program is a national IKM database system that is presented in the form of industrial profiles, centers, and products integrated with the existing marketplace with the aim to increase access to the IKM market through internet marketing.

Indonesian handicraft industry is a sector that needs to prioritise its development because it produces high value-added products and absorbs labor quite a lot. Almost all in the corners of Indonesia, handicraft industry continues to grow by producing a variety of featured crafts. Handmade handicrafts are usually handicrafts made of wood, metal, leather, glass, ceramics, and textiles.
